Neural Tuning Size in a Model of Primate Visual Processing Accounts for Three Key Markers of Holistic Face Processing.

چکیده
Faces are an important and unique class of visual stimuli, and have been of interest to neuroscientists for many years. Faces are known to elicit certain characteristic behavioral markers, collectively labeled "holistic processing", while non-face objects are not processed holistically. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. The main aim of this computational simulation work is to investigate the neural mechanisms that make face processing holistic. Using a model of primate visual processing, we show that a single key factor, "neural tuning size", is able to account for three important markers of holistic face processing: the Composite Face Effect (CFE), Face Inversion Effect (FIE) and Whole-Part Effect (WPE). Our proof-of-principle specifies the precise neurophysiological property that corresponds to the poorly-understood notion of holism, and shows that this one neural property controls three classic behavioral markers of holism. Our work is consistent with neurophysiological evidence, and makes further testable predictions. Overall, we provide a parsimonious account of holistic face processing, connecting computation, behavior and neurophysiology.

Neural tuning size is a key factor underlying holistic face processing
Faces are a class of visual stimuli with unique significance, for a variety of reasons. They are ubiquitous throughout the course of a person's life, and face recognition is crucial for daily social interaction. Faces are also unlike any other stimulus class in terms of certain physical stimulus characteristics. Furthermore, faces have been empirically found to elicit certain characteristic beh...
متن کاملPrediction of the changes in physicochemical properties of key lime juice during IR thermal processing by artificial neural networks
Thermal processing of the key lime juice leads to the inactivation of pectin methylesterase (PME) and the degradation of ascorbic acid (AA). These changes affect directly the cloud stability and color of the juice. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was applied for designing and developing an intelligent system for prediction of the thermal processing effects on the physico...
متن کاملShort-latency category specific neural responses to human faces in macaque inferotemporal cortex
In this article I would present evidence to show that timing of the flow of neural signals within the ventral visual stream is a crucial part of the neural code for categorization of faces. We recorded the activity of 554 inferotemporal neurons from two macaque monkeys performing a fixation task. More than 1000 object images including human and non-primate animal faces were presented up to 10 t...
متن کاملCurl Size and Pelt Color Determination of Zandi Lambs Using Image Processing and Artificial Neural Network
In this study, a method based on using image processing and artificial neural network is introduced to determine pelt color and curl size of newborn lambs in Zandi sheep. The data was collected from 300 newborn lambs reared in the Zandi sheep breeding centre of Khojir, Tehran. Primarily, curl size and pelt color of new born lambs was recorded by experienced appraisers, and at the same time, sev...
متن کاملAircraft Visual Identification by Neural Networks
In the present paper, an efficient method for three dimensional aircraft pattern recognition is introduced. In this method, a set of simple area based features extracted from silhouette of aerial vehicles are used to recognize an aircraft type from its optical or infrared images taken by a CCD camera or a FLIR sensor. These images can be taken from any direction and distance relative to the fly...
